This really sticks out to me. My MIL haven’t been on speaking terms for months now. It’s so pleasant. But that’s not the point, here. My MIL is a Christian. She thinks the bible should be taken literally and be followed without questioning. You’re supposed to take the Bible at face value and do as it says. However, she’s a typical hypocritical Christian. She lies, she has/does sleep around, she hurts people, she neglects her children, she doesn’t show love for her children, she thinks homosexuality is okay..even though it’s a “sin,” she cheated on her husband, etc. She basically just does everything a good christian shouldn’t do.
My husband and I are agnostic/agnostic atheists. She’s known this since I first started hanging out with my husband. And yet, she thinks I’ve stolen his soul and traded it to the devil or something. She thinks that I’ve changed his mind about religion. In all honesty, he’s opened my eyes more to religion than the other way around. The first Christmas my husband and I spent together, we gave each other cards and wrote “happy X-mas” on them. She flipped out about taking the Christ out of Christmas. Christmas night, my then boyfriend and I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning discussing different views and ideas and theories on religion and watching Ancient Aliens. Okay, I’m getting off track as I very often do.
So anywhoo. My mother-in-law knew of our religious beliefs. But right before my husband and I got married, my MIL started asking us about our beliefs. Quite frequently, too. She asked, we told her. Then she’d ask why. And we told her. Then she’d want to ask my husband things about the Bible and like “But the Bible says THIS, so why don’t you believe it?” kind of things. Really? Because a BOOK tells us something is so, we’re to believe it? No. I don’t think so. So essentially my husband broke down the bible for her, told her of the contradictions and actually proveded verses for his argument. We didn’t argue with her or ridicule her. We calmly stated that we don’t believe in the Bible and for us, we don’t really believe there’s a god. We left on good terms that night.
The next day, my MIL had a tantrum about how my hubby and I persecuted her for her beliefs. She said we ganged up on her. Now, keep in mind that my SIL was also there that night and at the time, she was a Christian. She asked us questions as well. She did not feel ganged up on, bullied, persecuted, or whatever other adjective you want to use. However, my MIL felt that we disrespected her in her own house and somehow, it was just my fault. Then she started laying into us about how we needed god in our lives and without god, our marriage would fail, etc.
It just really upset me that she felt that way. I didn’t feel bad for saying what we said or believing what we believed or how we discussed things with her because we were calm and I thought everyone was open minded enough to discuss these things among family members. Clearly, I was wrong. My MIL kept saying we made her defend her beliefs to us. No, not exactly. She was the one that started the conversation and we stated our reasons for not believing in religion. If anything, we were the ones being persecuted and having to defend our beliefs. But since she’s a christian and she sees someone that doesn’t believe the same things as her, we’re imposing on her right to freedom of religion? We’re persecuting her? It it just so infuriating! *sigh* Enough about my MIL. She’s a POS and my husband and I are so glad she’s out of our lives. Only another 17 months before my SIL can move away and we can all be done with her.
